As General Manager with Elk Valley Casino and the Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall, Mr. Johnson restructured and re-aligned staffing levels and market position, updated marketing campaigns utilizing the player / marketing system, developed innovative special events implemented property wide guest service training, which produced an increase and stabilization of EBITDA.
At Elk Valley Larry’s performance was celebrated by the independent external auditor in their annual report ranking the three year period in the Top 5% for casino performance in the country”.
He successfully designed, developed and opened a retail gift & tobacco shop, growing revenue into multi-million dollar ventures.
During his tenure as President, General Manager for Tropicana, Las Vegas, NV / River Palms Casino Resort, Laughlin, NV and Casino Project Manager for the Westin Dawn Beach Casino Resort, St. Maarten N/A. Mr. Johnson played a major role in securing $2.9B in financing for the purchase of Aztar Corp, by developing the business model companywide that was the key success factor for moving this project forward.
Mr. Johnson strengthened existing operations by identifying critical development issues with a temporary property and implemented proper repair and maintenance programs in critical areas for the temporary facility while developing overall master plan while performing as Vice President of Operations for Big Rock Casino in Santa Fe, NM.
Ameristar Casino Hotel in Council Bluffs, IA recruited Mr. Johnson as their Vice President of Hotel Operations because of his diverse skill sets. While working for Ameristar Larry developed a strategy to control cost and increase guest satisfaction in the non-gaming departments, with establishing record company profit in F&B and guest satisfaction of 98%, performed the role of lead executive in the design and development of the Star Arena the 3,500 seat entertainment venue producing record revenues for the property, created a very successful local TV cooking program, developed and administered an intern and externship consisting of 9 students graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts in conjunction with Iowa Western Community College and was instrumental in the successful purchase of two properties in Kansas City, Missouri & Saint Louis, Missouri.
Mr. Johnson was a key member of the corporate executive team with Black Hawk Gaming & Development. He successfully developed, designed and opened the Lodge Casino at Black Hawk, a ground up development that consisted of 900 slot machines, 25 table games, 12 poker tables, 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 1 retail store, 300 seat banquet facility and 50 hotel suites. Larry was a key operation executive Gilpin Hotel Casino, overseeing 550 slot machines, 20 table games 10 poker tables, OTB and 2 restaurants and 3 bars.
As a Corporate Certified Executive Chef and/or Food and Beverage Executive, Mr. Johnson worked his culinary magic for Yosemite National Park, as Certified Executive Chef over seeing as many as 27 food & beverage outlets. At Mirage Casino Resort he was appointed to the pre-opening & opening team, was part of 2 expansions and the addition of 2 restaurants. At Harrah’s Casino Resort Mr. Johnson was lead executive on the task force for the 2 restaurant openings and the opening of Harrah’s Laughlin, NV. Harrah’s also saw Mr. Johnson as a high potential employee and was enrolled into the Executive Development Training Program
Mr. Johnson is an advocate for lifelong training and his personal development is a testament to that value. He has achieved certification as Executive Chef and Executive Management in Slot, Table Game and Hotel operations. He has a mastery of Management Systems, namely, Oasis & Oasis 360, IGT, Micros Opera, Infogenesis, LMS, Manager Pro, Stratton Warren, Mas 90, Kronos & Infinity. His specialization also includes Six Sigma & Design for Six Sigma and PLP, Positive Leadership Practices
